AT&T dropped the price of the HTC First, AKA the Facebook Phone, from ninety-nine dollars to ninety-nine cents today. AT&T hasn’t said why, but this could be a move by Facebook to get the phone into more pockets. Facebook Home has been received with rather mixed reviews. More than 50% of the reviewers on the Google Play store have given the app the lowest possible rating of one star. Many professional reviewers have given the app high marks for good design, but low marks for utility. In the end I suspect that Facebook Home and the Facebook Phone will appeal to a pretty small crowd. The problem is a philosophical one. I think most of us would still prefer to think of our phones as a digital companion that can make calls, help us navigate, take pictures and so on; not just as Facebook with a phone hidden underneath. One thing’s for sure, Facebook will keep trying.
