NVidia posted this video showing off their new facial rendering technology which they are calling “Face Works.” Realistic digital humans are pretty much the holy grail of 3D animation. Some studios have pulled it off using motion capture. A technology in which a human acts out the part of a digital character. For example, Andy Serkis is probably best known for his performance of Gollum in the Lord of the Rings and Kong, in King Kong. Until now, the rendering of these characters (the process of making images from the data) has been a time consuming chore. These kinds of digital characters have been created before for movies, but never for video games because video games require real-time rendering. NVidia shows here that they can now render realistic digital humans, in real-time, for video games. It’s quite an accomplishment.
